A floating ship can not avoid rolling and pitching in the waves inherent in conventional ships. So a lot of effort has been made among the engineers to build the ship free from rolling and pitching. Finally they have reached to the conclusion that the ship must fly in order to avoid the wave's influence. This conclusion is the basic concept of the development of the Jetfoil.
The Jetfoil in FOILBORNE operation flies above the water surface by the lift generated by fully submerged foils, being different from the conventional ship which floats by the buoyancy. For a comfortable ride, the lift force control is very important. The lift force of the Jetfoil can be controlled by the movement of flaps fitted at to the trailing edge of foils, to keep the hull at a certain height from the water surface and to make a turn inward.
The Jetfoil in FOILBORNE operation sails without uncomfortable rolling and pitching, flying over the water surface and that provides a wonderful ride. While in FOILBORNE, ACS which has many sensors on the hull parts catches ship's movement and then controls and stabilizes the ship.
When the waves become high and begin to hit the hull bottom, it is the captain's turn. The captain holds the helm by right hand and operates the depth control lever which controls the depth of the foil by left hand. By manipulating the depth control lever the hull can keep a certain relative height above water surface, and fly over high waves. Therefore the Jetfoil can avoid uncomfortable slamming (wave bumps against a hull) which is frequently experienced on the conventional ships.
When the Jetfoil turns, the hull lists to port or starboard. This is like the same turn as of an airplane. The Jetfoil can turn without reducing speed nor making passengers feel uncomfortable centrifugal force. We call it bankturn. As the Jetfoil flies over the sea, the view from the window is quite clear.
