Kowloon-Canton
Railway Corporation (KCRC) in Hong Kong operates the light rail system
in the north-west district of New Territories. Phase I was inaugurated
in 1988 with a fleet of 70 LRV. In order to cope with the increasing
ridership and the extension of the system, KCRC placed an order for
30 LRV (Phase II) to Kawasaki in 1991. There are two types of LRV; D-car
(motor car with a driver's cab at one end) and MT-car (motored trailer
car). One passenger train is either a single operation or multiple operation
of up to three cars. The car length over coupler faces is 20.2 m, equivalent
to heavy rail cars in Japan.
