New York City Transit R143 Subway Cars
There are 212 R143 cars for use in the B Division. These standard-setting cars expand upon the advanced technological base established during previous R142A program. Among the technological innovations introduced in the R142A program, and carried into the R143 cars, are an advanced monitoring and diagnostics system, an automated announcement system, a passenger emergency intercom system, computer network-controlled propulsion and braking system, and lightweight bogie with air-spring secondary suspension. Ground-breaking new features have also been added to the R143 cars; including provision for Communication-Based Train Control (CBTC) and an electronic LED interior information sign system.
