The Yumeshima-Maishima Bridge (tentative name) crosses the seaway between the artificial islands of Yumeshima and Maishima that are situated in the Osaka Bay area. It was constructed as part of the Osaka City development for the 21st century.
This is the first full scale floating bridge in Japan, and even in the world, a bridge of this form is not to be found on this scale. In the planning and design stages, it was soon determined that there were few design standards in place, and no established technical skills for this Movable Floating Bridge.
We therefore encountered and had to examine unique problems right from the planning stage.
In this paper, we describe investigations into potential shake and the results of hypothetical ship collisions, problems particularly affecting floating bridges. Details are also given about the examination methods and the interpretation of results.
