In March 1996, Kawasaki Heavy Industries,Ltd. , together with four major Japanese shipyards, completed development of a new contra-rotating propeller(CRP) system which could lead to great savings in energy.
The development of the CRP system covered not only the propeller, but also the drive shafting system including contra-rotating bearings and a cannon structure.
The new contra-rotating bearing is called an AHT bearing, and these bearings are used in the cannon structure. In the final stages of shafting system development, we carried out a fullscale model test of shafting equivalent to 10,000 PS shaft horsepower over a long period, which allowed us to ascertain the performance, reliability and durability, thus validating the design of the entire shafting system.
This paper describes the development of the shafting system, concentrating on the full-scale model test and the development of the cannon structure.
