Kawasaki Commences Mass Production of the ERUP2/L Electric Remote Control Unit for Controlling Travel of Construction Machinery

Tokyo, November 2, 2023 — Kawasaki Heavy Industries, Ltd. announced the start of mass production in October 2023 for the ERUP2/L electric remote control unit used to control travel of construction machinery. The unit comprises a set of biaxial electric pedals used primarily for controlling the operation of excavator travel. Through cooperation with the Japan Quality Assurance Organization (JQA), Kawasaki has attained certification for this product under IEC 61508*1 and ISO 13849*2 international functional safety design standards, as certified by TÜV NORD CERT.*3


Features of This Product

  1. The operational mechanism is the same as that used in Kawasaki’s hydraulic pedals, and thus provides operability optimized for construction machinery
  2. Shares the same installation pitch as Kawasaki’s hydraulic pedals, making for easy replacement
  3. Uses a non-contact-type angle sensor to ensure high durability
  4. Equipped with a damper*4 to mitigate sudden, unintended operational inputs caused by shaking and swaying of the construction machinery

In recent years, the use of electric control has become more widespread in excavators and other construction machinery, with increasing numbers of equipment being compatible with electric control. The ERUP2/L was developed to provide electric travel control of construction machinery and serve as a replacement for conventional hydraulic pedals. The use of electric control eliminates the need for hydraulic piping, simplifying the equipment layout. Furthermore, Information and Communication Technology (ICT) and automated operation can be implemented, as can adjustment of controllability for construction machinery, enabling operation by a wider range of operators with varying levels of skill and experience. Since developing and commencing mass production for its first electric remote control unit in the early 1990s, Kawasaki has delivered a total of 550,000 units to customers over the past three decades. The ERUP2/L was developed based on electric control technologies accumulated over the years, offers high durability and outstanding ease of operation, and contributes to greater operator comfort through reduced vibrations.
